Aoudad Sheep, also known as Barbary sheep, were introduced to Texas in the 1950s for hunting and conservation purposes. These hardy and adaptable creatures have since thrived in the rugged terrain of the state, even in areas like the arid Trans-Pecos region. Aoudad Sheep are known for their impressive horns, which can grow over 30 inches long on older rams and sport an impressive mane like chaps down their neck and legs. They are a popular and challenging game species among hunters due to their elusive nature, sharp eyesight and challenging behavior.
Despite being non-native to Texas, Aoudad Sheep have become an integral part of the state’s wildlife landscape and continue to capture the fascination of both wildlife enthusiasts and hunters alike.
